Who We Are

The Miami Artist Census is an independent, artist-run research initiative that identifies and analyzes facts about the needs of Miami-based artists—the first of its kind in Florida. Made for artists by artists, the county-wide data project collected information to help public and private funders know where and how to allocate funding for local artists, and provide public
officials with the data needed to support policies responding to artists’ needs. Furthermore, it will give artists, art institutions, researchers, and the public, a clearer picture of what today’s Miami artist community looks like for years to come.

All artists living in Miami-Dade County were invited to be a part of history and complete our first survey between October 1, 2024 – January 31, 2025. 443 Miami-Dade County artistsin a wide range of disciplines took the survey, representing a range of identities, including race, gender, age, and ability.

The backbone of the Miami Artist Census is our survey. Originally developed by Los Angeles-based artists as part of the Los Angeles Artist Census, our survey was edited and adapted to address the issues that are particular to artists in Miami-Dade County.

The Miami Artist Census was originally initiated by members of Artist for Artists: Miami and, subsequently, developed into a separate initiative.

Artists for Artists: Miami is an open collective, independently founded by a diverse (and growing) group of Miami-based artists at the start of 2023. Founded in order to begin building collective power amongst artists in the Miami region, the completely independent group of over 100 artists has become a haven for Miami artists of all stripes to address the many issues facing them today. Actions by our unaffiliated sub-groups have taken place to protect artists interests and build solidarity in relation to equitable pay structures, censorship, and data collection and proliferation, with much more to come.
